About CAV EMPT
Cav Empt, often abbreviated as C.E, is a Japanese streetwear brand founded in 2011 by graphic designer SK8THING (Shinsuke Takizawa) and British creative director Toby Feltwell. The brand’s name comes from the Latin phrase "caveat emptor"—meaning “let the buyer beware”—a reflection of its critical perspective on consumer culture and mass production.
Before launching Cav Empt, SK8THING played a key role in shaping the visual identities of influential brands like A Bathing Ape (BAPE) and Billionaire Boys Club, while Toby Feltwell brought a diverse background in law, music, and streetwear, having worked with artists like Dizzee Rascal. Their combined expertise created a brand that blends British and Japanese influences, offering a unique take on streetwear.
The idea for Cav Empt emerged in the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, a disaster that led to widespread blackouts in Tokyo. This moment of reflection inspired the founders to create a brand that critiques modern consumerism and questions the impact of technology on society. Their collections often feature retro-futuristic aesthetics, dystopian imagery, and bold graphics, set against oversized, boxy silhouettes that have become a signature of the brand.
Cav Empt quickly gained a dedicated following, known for its enigmatic designs and subversive messaging. In 2016, the brand opened its first flagship store in Tokyo’s Aoyama district, further solidifying its presence in the global streetwear scene. Collaborations with brands like Vans, along with a strong underground appeal, have kept Cav Empt at the forefront of contemporary fashion.
Today, Cav Empt remains a cult favorite, celebrated for its thought-provoking designs and distinct visual language. By combining sci-fi influences, social commentary, and innovative graphics, the brand continues to push boundaries, offering more than just clothing—it delivers a message on the complexities of modern life.
