Chamula is a heritage-driven brand founded by Yuki Matsuda, the designer behind Meg Company, born from his travels through rural Mexico in the 1990s. Deeply inspired by the craftsmanship he encountered in the highlands, Matsuda created Chamula to help preserve traditional artisanal techniques and support skilled makers whose knowledge has been passed down through generations. The brand works closely with local craftsmen and women, ensuring that each piece reflects authenticity, cultural continuity, and true handmade integrity.
Chamula’s knitwear is produced entirely by hand, with each garment crafted by the same artisan from start to finish—from spinning the yarn to knitting the final piece. Made from fine Merino wool sourced from sheep grazing in the Mexican mountains, the knits are exceptionally soft, warm, and comfortable against the skin, offering a remarkable warmth-to-weight ratio without itchiness. These traditional production methods give every piece subtle variations, making each garment deeply personal and unique.
Beyond knitwear, Chamula is equally known for its huarache-style footwear, crafted using locally sourced, vegetable-tanned leather and horsehair. The leathers are intentionally finished “naked” to preserve their natural fiber structure, allowing them to breathe, age beautifully, and develop a rich patina over time. Each pair is hand-painted and constructed using time-honored techniques, blending elegant silhouettes with indigenous Mexican detailing. Through this commitment to material honesty and artisanal process, Chamula stands as a tribute to rural Mexican craft—creating goods that carry soul, history, and lasting character.
