RED WING SHOES was founded in 1905 by Charles H. Beckman and 14 investors in Red Wing, Minnesota, with the goal of creating durable, high-quality footwear for workers in demanding industries like mining, farming, and logging. The brand quickly set itself apart with its “pegged-and-nailed” construction, ensuring superior durability and comfort.

During World War I, Red Wing produced the Model 1088 trench boot for the U.S. Army, designed to withstand harsh conditions. In 1919, the company introduced the Brown Chief boot, specifically crafted for farmers using specially tanned leather to endure heavy use. By 1928, Red Wing had solidified its identity with the introduction of its winged logo, inspired by Chief Red Wing’s ceremonial headdress.

As World War II unfolded, Red Wing once again supported American soldiers, manufacturing boots in 239 different sizes and widths to meet diverse needs. Expanding its operations, the company opened a second production facility in 1960 and established its own tannery, ensuring consistent leather quality for its footwear.

Over the decades, Red Wing boots became a staple among workers, outdoor enthusiasts, and style-conscious consumers. In recent years, the brand has seen a resurgence, embraced by younger generations and celebrities like Timothée Chalamet, who has been spotted wearing the iconic moc toe boots.
